Pay It Forward

Have you heard about the Pay it Forward Bloggers? I am cutting and pasting the following from Jo’s blog.

If you are one of the first 3 people to comment on this post I will send you something which will arrive at your home in the next 12 months. (If it doesn’t you have written permission to publicly denounce me as a liar and a cheat 🙂 )

The catch?  If you are one of the winners you agree to pay it forward three times in the next year.

Please leave a comment even if you don’t blog or if you don’t feel you can give a gift.  Maybe you could do someone a good turn…carry someone’s bags to their car,  send a card to someone you know is struggling, be patient when you normally wouldn’t, pay for the person behind you in a drive-thru, buy a child a treat, give a small donation to the charity of your choice….whatever. Just leave your comment.

Okay, is that clear? Basically, someone, somewhere in the world started this off, and each time you receive an item from a PIF blogger, you commit to pay it forward three times over. It doesn’t have to be a big gift, and you can PIF more than 3 items if you’re up to it.  Have fun everyone!  Can’t wait to see who the first 3 commenters are, this will be fun!

P.S.—Let me know how you pay it forward.  I would love to hear how we are making the world better one good deed at a time!!

Family Game Night

Today in Target I picked up Trivial Pursuit:  Family Edition and decided tonight would be Family Game Night.  Sometimes FGN is more fun in theory than in reality.  All it takes is one of us getting upset and the whole thing is shot.  Tonight, however, was a really good night.

We played kids vs adults and Bruce and I were getting our butts kicked in the beginning.  We finally found our groove and had the opportunity to lock in a win but I jumped the gun and lost it for us.  The name the Greeks gave the underworld is Hades, not Atlantis.  I {know} that!  I don’t know why I shouted out Atlantis.  My ears heard “underworld” but my mind thought “underwater”.  Dumb, dumb, dumb.   If we had a badge of shame I would be wearing it this week.  Maybe I’ll make that for myself.  A scarlet “L” for loser pinned to my shirt.

We are very lucky in the fact that our kids get along the vast majority of the time.  Sure, they bicker and argue like any siblings but they also truly enjoy each other’s company and can spend hours together.  Considering they are not the same gender and  are 4 grades apart in school, I think this is pretty dang cool.   FGN was filled with moments like these:

But we also had one or two moments like this

Apparently whatever answer Noah suggested didn’t seem quite right to Kayla….

Just keepin’ it real, dawg.

From the Mouths of Babes….

Well, Noah isn’t a “babe” anymore, but his honesty still makes me laugh sometimes.

He had an assignment at school to write an essay on his “Special Person”.  He chose Bruce.

Let’s remember, Noah’s an athlete, not an artist….

Did he just call Bruce fat and me dumb??  I think I could write an entire thesis about this paper and what it says about our family, but I just want to clarify a couple of points.

1.  I am not a great cook.  I don’t even like cooking.  Once, Kayla asked me if we could have something that didn’t come from a box or the freezer for dinner.  I said, “Probably not anytime soon.”  On the positive side, Noah’s future wife doesn’t have to go far to rise above my culinary talents.  Noah will think her cooking is the best thing on this planet as long as she made it from real ingredients.  Future wife, if you’re out there, you can thank me in 20 years.  I think I would like a string of pearls by that time.

2.  I am also not dumb.  We have not yet gotten to the point where I can’t help Kayla with a problem during homework.  Sometimes, especially with Algebra, I have to take a couple of minutes to read the lesson as a refresher.  It doesn’t take long for me to figure it out.  But you know what?  Some days I just don’t {feel} like doing it.  Some days I am tired or crabby and I don’t want to take the effort to turn on that part of my brain.  Some days I send her to Bruce and tell her to ask him for help.  The fact of the matter is, he’s better at math than I am.  I can admit that freely, because I know I’m better at most of the other stuff.

(For those of you that don’t know me well, that was a joke.  I don’t want to give the impression that I’m conceited.  I frequently make my kids eat frozen chicken nuggets for dinner, how could I be conceited?)

3.  A lot of the other things Noah said are very true.  Bruce is very generous and funny.  He loves sports and hates when the Wild lose.  He loves helping Noah with anything and everything.  And he does have a wee bit of a pot belly.  But so do I, so I guess we’re even.

I was lucky enough to meet baby Z today and take some newborn photos of him.  He was such a sweet little guy and was more than happy to snooze for me once he had a fully belly.  I want to thank Z’s parents for allowing me into their home for this session.  Here is a sneak peek at a few from today:

On another note, I used http://www.random.org to choose a winner for the giveaway.  Steph (myliesmom) if you want to email me your address at michellejohnson418@comcast.net I will get the prize off to you!  Thanks all for your comments!!

Little Miss “A”

I had the wonderful opportunity today to photograph Miss A.  She stole my heart the minute I saw her.  She has such a kind, pure heart.  We went to a park near her home and I followed her around as she explored her world.

I am so excited to edit the rest of her photos…I think I will have a hard time choosing the best ones because she is such a beautiful little girl!    Thank you, J & K for allowing me to spend time with your precious daughter…

Look out Pioneer Woman….

You know one of the things I really like about having older kids?  They occasionally take initiative.

If they’re in the mood.

 And it suits their needs.

In keeping with the whole “Spring has Sprung” thing, Kayla and a friend decided that they wanted to grill hot dogs for supper.  You know what I said?  “Go for it.  Just clean up your mess, please.”   First, they made a menu:

Then preparations began:

I was fairly impressed.  All four food groups were represented.  (Yes, we count hot dogs as meat in this house.) They set the table themselves.  They cleared the table themselves.  All that was left for me was to pick lettuce off of the floor.

I should be careful.  She might be trying to take over my job.

As a side note, a couple of people asked about my edit on the basketball picture from yesterday.  I’ll be completely honest here, I worked on that picture in PSE for a long time.  I tried it bright, urban, saturated, desaturated, B&W, sepia….I had decided to scrap it and I went back into LR to look at some others.  As I was moving the cursor around I landed on a preset called “Matt’s 300 Look Preset” which can be found at  http://www.lightroomkillertips.com/2008/monday-presets-the-300-look/ .  It pulled it back into PSE after that and did a few more adjustments, but the base of the edit was that preset.  It rocks!!

Spring, Minnesota Style

Anyone who has lived in the Upper Midwest knows that we define Spring  a little differently than the rest of the country.  I distinctly remember wearing shorts in high school as soon as it hit 40 degrees.  That is a heat wave for us when we have experienced months of temperatures and wind chills that have not made it above zero degrees.

It also means the neighborhood comes back to life.  Children we have not seen for months reemerge, much taller and sometimes unrecognizable.  I cannot wait for warmer weather, kids running around until 10:00pm, bonfires, the smell of freshly cut grass…..it cannot come soon enough as far as I’m concerned.

But for now, this is as good as it gets

Muddy feet:

Walking the dog in flip flops (and tube socks!) with an admirer trying to catch up

And a hockey player going all Woody Harrelson (White Men Can’t Jump) on me
